Ontario Students Are Calling for Stronger Mental Health Crisis Support on Campus

The Issue

Students across Ontario are navigating increasingly complex mental health challenges while balancing academic pressure, financial stress, and major life transitions.

When a student reaches a point of crisis, the path to help should be clear, coordinated, and easy to access. Yet many students still report confusion about where to turn, long wait times for support, and uncertainty about what happens when a situation becomes urgent.

The Government of Ontario recently passed legislation requiring post-secondary institutions to establish student mental health policies. This reflects an important recognition that student wellbeing must be a priority across campuses.

Students Seeking Stronger Support is a student-led campaign calling for the next step: stronger and more coordinated mental health crisis response systems across Ontario campuses.

Students are asking institutions to build clearer crisis response protocols, stronger escalation pathways for high-acuity situations, and meaningful student involvement in how support systems are designed and reviewed.

Students deserve support systems that are prepared, responsive, and ready when it matters most.

If you believe Ontario campuses can build stronger mental health crisis response systems, add your name and stand with students across the province calling for stronger support.
