Working in the food and catering industry since I was 14, my eyes have really been opened to how much perfectly good food is wasted every day.

Every year in the UK 18 million tonnes of food end up in landfill, with its annual value being £23 BILLION (which is rising rapidly).

This is food that will literally be fine for days after - or could even be frozen extending its life for weeks, feeding families or someone who is struggling for money. These could be sandwiches, ready meals, bread, eggs, cakes, soups, fruit and veg...most items but drinks. I have witnessed great numbers chucked in the bin regularly. At home, you wouldn't chuck food away if it went out that day, if it looked and smelt completely fine (well at least my family wouldn't).

In the uk many people and families on low incomes/ poverty are unable to afford “healthy” foods, and working recently I have noticed so much of this 'healthy' food is just chucked in the bin with no second thought. The issue is that companies are no longer allowed to give food wastage away due to people sueing, or claiming money back by returning the goods, therefore making companies scared. Surely this doesn't speak for the majority of us.  

Obviously there is always going to be wastage in this industry, but what I would love to see if for this 'wastage' to go to a better cause- given to soup kitchens, families that need it, food banks, homeless people, charities, even students!!! Can we all wake up to the real need to not waste our food!!!

The aim of this petition would be to curb this issue by perhaps creating a method, e.g. signing something that would enable others to benefit from all this waste !! Like they say - one man's trash is another's treasure.
