Oh Beehive! - Join the Residents of Utah to Add a Recall Law into Legislation!
The Issue
Sign this petition and join alongside Utah residents who are ready for a state and citywide applicable Recall Law. Who would be affected by this recall law? Every resident and elected position in Utah.
Currently, Utah does not have a protocol or course of action to recall any elected officials in the state. What that means is that no matter how the job performance is being done by the elected officials, whether it be a local or state position, the people and communities that elected those officials cannot recall or in other words 'revote' them out of office. How does this affect everyone? To put it simply, if an elected official chooses to abuse the powers of their position or neglect their constituents, the affected constituents will have to wait until the elected official's time is up for that position.
What is at stake here? The first answer is: our future. A recall law would only be beneficial to enact if elected officials stray away from their responsibilities to a damaging degree, if officials directly violate laws and/or the rights of their constituents, or if the official has participated in illegal and/or fraudulent representation to be elected. Unfortunately, examples exist in Utah of elected officials and former candidates abusing their power who are or would benefit from the current non-existence of a recall law. We are also seeing the consequences in the House of Representatives of what happens when places like the 3rd Congressional district of New York vote in individuals such as 'George Santos'. Without proper action, voters are left helpless to deal with the risks and recklessness of their elected official's choices. Without proper protocols or action in place, constituents are put into a vulnerable position where their livelihoods are directly impacted, and they can do nothing about it.
Enacting and adding a recall law to Utah legislation would protect all Utah residents and allow rightful and necessary change to take place in the event of an elected official's dereliction of their duty, abuse of power, or in the findings of illegal and/or fraudulent representation to be elected. Utah residents deserve a course of action that allows the individuals and communities to hold their elected officials accountable if the governing bodies that hold those positions cannot or choose not to. This recall law at the same time will help provide security for our elections and helps set a standard to which officials cannot overstep their boundaries or neglect their performance as representatives or candidates.
Even though we cannot change what is happening in New York or the House of Representatives, we can change what's happening in Utah and act before issues with Utah officials escalate and it's too late. We can make the changes necessary to ensure that the issues that are currently taking place will not only be dealt with swiftly but will no longer continue. Proper legislative action needs to be taken to provide that security and assurance for all Utah voters and communities.
