The Issue

Several men from my town tragically took their own lives in less than a month. This devastating reality has shaken our community, leaving us heartbroken and seeking answers as to how we could have prevented these losses. It's time to address the silent crisis of men's mental health with concrete actions.

Each year, women in the UK benefit from preventive healthcare options such as smear tests and mammograms, services that are pivotal in safeguarding their health. Yet, men do not have equivalent annual health checks focused on mental well-being, despite suicide being a leading cause of death among men. In fact, studies have shown that men are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than women in the UK.

We can change this. Providing annual mental health check-ups through the NHS would offer a critical opportunity for men to discuss their mental health without stigma, much like how physical exams are approached. This initiative would not only help in detecting early signs of mental distress but also normalize the conversation to begin reducing the stigma surrounding men's mental health.

We urge the NHS to implement yearly mental health assessments for men, ensuring that this crucial aspect of healthcare becomes a standard practice. Addressing mental health proactively can save lives and provide men with the support they need before reaching a point of crisis.
