Offer better support for children with SEN in mainstream schools
The Issue
My daughter, Aaliyah, has Special Educational Needs (SEN) and was unjustly denied an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) during her primary school years, even though I, her mother, recognized that she would require this support in high school. Recognizing the long process involved in obtaining an EHCP, I attempted to secure her future support early, yet was met with resistance. As a result, Aaliyah is now unable to attend school due to the lack of support and understanding she faces within her current educational environment. This systemic oversight is leaving children without the assistance they need to flourish.
Children with SEN deserve the opportunity to thrive in mainstream schools, but too often, families like mine are left fighting tirelessly just to secure basic support services. Currently, the process is convoluted and full of unnecessary hurdles that prevent timely and adequate assistance. According to a report by the UK Department for Education, more than 1.3 million school-aged children in the UK have SEN, and too many of them are not receiving the help they need to succeed in a mainstream setting. This is unacceptable and only serves to widen the gap in educational equality.
The government and educational authorities must take immediate action to streamline the EHCP acquisition process and ensure that all children with SEN have access to the resources and support they require. We propose implementing a more straightforward, transparent application process for EHCPs, increasing funding for SEN resources within mainstream schools, and providing additional training for educators to better understand and support SEN students.
These changes will not only benefit children like Aaliyah but will enhance the educational experience for all students, promoting a more inclusive and understanding school community. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that respects and meets their needs.
