The Issue

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) currently does not offer Algebra 1 to 8th graders as part of the standard academic year curriculum, putting our children at a disadvantage compared to their peers in other districts. Our students must take Algebra 1 in Summer school after 8th grade or must double up on two math courses in high school in order to take Calculus in 12th grade. Our students could also be delayed in taking Algebra 2, which is a significant portion of the SAT.

Research has shown that students who take Algebra 1 early are more likely to succeed in advanced mathematics, paving the way for STEM careers that are in high demand. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports that students who complete Algebra 1 before high school are more prepared for college-level coursework, setting them on a path toward lucrative and rewarding careers.

I understand firsthand the importance of a strong educational foundation. My journey through graduate degrees in computer science and management was paved with crucial math courses that began in middle school. As a child of immigrants for whom English was a second language, math was a way for us to excel. Offering Algebra 1 in 8th grade could be a game-changer for many students in Oakland, just as it was for me.

We urge the OUSD Board of Education to prioritize this crucial educational enhancement. Our neighbors in San Francisco have changed course and have re-introduced Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Equipping our children with the mathematical skills they need early on is not just an investment in their future, but in the future of our entire community.

Join me in advocating for a brighter future for Oakland’s students. Sign this petition and let’s make quality math education accessible to all 8th graders in our district.
