The Issue

Detach Nurse Aide training from OBRA!

Since OBRA was passed in 1987, the guidelines for nurse aide training haven't kept up with the significant changes in healthcare, especially the evolving roles and responsibilities of CNAs. This outdated regulation has many deficiencies! For instance, it is narrowly focused on long-term care, failing to recognize the broader scope of CNA duties today, and is a contributing factor to the severe shortage of CNAs in the workforce. It's time for a substantial update that reflects the current healthcare environment. By detaching nurse aide training from OBRA, we can modernize the curriculum to ensure it meets the demands of today's healthcare settings. Join us in taking a pivotal first step in alleviating the CNA shortage by signing this petition for reform. Together, we can enhance our healthcare system by updating the standards of nurse aide training!

Changing federal law is a monumental undertaking, requiring an act of Congress and a presidential signature - but it is not impossible! However, these changes must NOT be left to politicians or lobbyists with a minuscule understanding of nursing assistant training. Instead, the reform must be spearheaded by those in the trenches of nursing assistant training: nurse educators, content experts, stakeholders, and associations.

This petition is NOT calling for the repeal of OBRA!
