Great news from last night’s SMCA meeting!
Our incredible SMCA President, Kara, has successfully negotiated with the Waste Management team to secure the future of our green bins.
Yes — our green bins are staying! 🌿
And here’s the truly remarkable part: Kara achieved this solely on the strength of our united voice expressed through the petition — before it was even presented. What an outstanding result and a testament to the power of community!
Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Kara for her persistence and leadership. 👏
Our next opportunity comes on 26 October (Kara, please confirm this date). On that night, we’ll have the chance to meet with Councillor Glen Tozer and hopefully representatives from Waste Management. Together, we’ll present the facts and figures that prove a “one-size-fits-all” approach simply doesn’t work for our remote rural community.
We’ll also make it clear that the proposed restricted opening hours would make our tip virtually unusable — paving the way for closure — and that tinkering with a system that already works serves no one’s interests.
This first success shows that when we speak up, nothing Council proposes is set in stone. We have every right to stand together and object to any changes that don’t serve our community — especially when we can demonstrate that they’re impractical and offer no financial benefit.
