The former Ballygolan Primary School site holds a special place in our community's history, and we, the residents and supporters of this local area, have watched closely as its future is deliberated. While we wholeheartedly endorse the need for redevelopment of this dormant site and recognise the importance of new housing in addressing current shortages, we are deeply concerned about the proposal under Planning Application LA04/2026/1250/F, which seeks to construct 73 apartments.

This proposal, while well-intentioned, presents significant challenges that we cannot ignore. Our streets, already burdened with traffic, will face severe congestion issues with the influx from such a dense development. This could lead to safety concerns and inconvenience for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

Moreover, the proposed number of apartments raises questions about parking availability within the vicinity. Insufficient parking solutions can lead to vehicles being parked along narrow streets, exacerbating traffic woes and diminishing the residential experience of those currently residing here.

This proposal also profoundly impacts the character of our area. We believe there are alternative, more balanced solutions that could better serve both the needs of current residents and future inhabitants, such as scaling down the project to offer fewer apartments and bungalows for elderly, thereby easing the burden on traffic and parking, and maintaining the community's character.

Politicians, planning officials, and developers have a responsibility to ensure that new projects harmonise with the existing community structure, respecting the area’s historical and sociocultural fabric.

We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this planning application and to work collaboratively with local residents to develop a solution that meets housing needs while respecting community concerns.
