Incredible news! We have been in contact with Draylen’s family, and they have given their blessing to fully pursue the awarding of a posthumous Bachelors degree and creation of a new scholarship in Draylen’s name! This is an incredibly important step in the journey for accessibility, and visibility for black musicians at the collegiate level.
Multiple news outlets have reached out to hear about Draylen Masons story and the hard work you are all putting in to share & sign this petition, and because of your dedication we have not only made our stretch goal, but exceeded it by the thousands. We have reached out to Oberlin College & Conservatory once again, detailing our desires for the school, and explaining that while it is incredibly important to support the funds for Draylen’s home, and Austin Soundwaves, it is imperative that institutions of higher education like Oberlin need to play a bigger role in supporting the future of artists like Draylen. The struggle only intensifies after high school, and the world is in dire need of more Draylens in the arts. We are also in contact with various Black Student affiliations at conservatories around the country, sharing Draylen’s story and asking for their formal support. More news to follow.
Please continue to share his story and ask everyone to sign this petition! There is no end number, let’s continue to show Draylen’s family that we stand behind them, and stand for all musicians of color!
