NY Tenants Demand: Beat Back the Governor's Eviction Budget, New Rights TODAY

The Issue

On Monday night, Governor Hochul announced “parameters for a conceptual agreement”​ for a State budget -- trying to create the appearance of a done deal when in fact she does not have the support necessary to launch her attack on working-class New York.

As the Associated Press reported, no budget bills have even been printed, let alone voted on, let alone passed. That's because the tenant movement and our tenant unions are fighting, and when we fight, we win.

Governor Hochul is trying -- and because we fight, has failed -- to:

° Reinstitute the IAI eviction bonus. We will never allow it! Hochul wants to let landlords push out rent-stabilized tenants so they can raise the rent between $278 and $417 per month.  The governor’s deal makes it especially profitable for landlords to push out long-term tenants, who tend to be seniors. Disgusting!

° Exclude  2.8 million tenants statewide -- the vast majority of tenants in so-called market rate units that don't yet have rent control -- from eviction protections.

° Give filthy-rich developers million dollar tax breaks to build housing no one can afford—and to push out working-class New York. Nope!

We can and will stop it—and instead fight for and win what we workers and tenants really need: lower rents and new rights. Let’s abolish deregulation, re-regulate all lost units, and win universal rent control.

Sign this petition to demand the State legislature beat back the Governor's attack and to immediately:

° IMMEDIATELY: Remove from the budget and any other legislation any attempt to reinstate the IAI eviction bonus or to weaken any element of the 2019 rent stabilization laws tenants fought for generations to build.

° IMMEDIATELY: Remove gutted "good cause eviction" completely from the budget.

° IMMEDIATELY: Abolish all forms of deregulation of rent-stabilized housing. Abolish the substantial rehabilitation loophole, the demolition loophole, and all forms of deregulation -- instead re-regulate all lost units and roll back the landlords' fraudulent rent increases. Lower rents now!

° IMMEDIATELY: Mandate and fully fund a universal Right to Counsel for all tenants in eviction courts statewide, and automatically freeze all eviction cases where tenants do not have a Right to Counsel lawyer.

° IMMEDIATELY: Institute universal rent control for all tenants Statewide.
