NY State is still a Sanctuary!
The Issue
Almost 15% - or 1 in 7 people - of our national population is foreign-born according to USAFacts.com. NY state in particular has 4.52 million - or 23% - foreign-born residents going to school, joining the workforce, and paying taxes. Immigrants don't drain our economy - they build it. With approximately 30% of the construction sector and 19.8% of the agricultural sector are comprised of foreign-born residents. They are indispensable to our economy - and yet they are abused and shipped away by the thousands.
Over 51,000 immigrants have been deported from January to June of this year alone. People are ambushed by ICE at immigration hearings, traffic stops, and any location in between and families are torn apart.
At least 70 US citizens have been caught in the crossfire so far: Numerous accounts show native-born children being deported - including a 4-year-old boy who was suffering from a rare cancer and deported without medication - with agents dismissing legal documents and detaining anybody they can find.
Amidst this widespread deportation platform, it's more important now more than ever to establish state-wide laws to aid migrant settlement into NY state as a whole.
Sign this petition to pass Senate Bill S2235, a bill that would prohibit state and city officers like the police or city government staff from questioning or disclosing one's immigration status.
This bill will limit taxpayer money and government resource use for immigration enforcement purposes. Basically, limit the government's cooperation with ICE's cruelty.
