The dynamic and brilliant NSW Environmental Defenders Office is once again fighting for us. They have issued the Government a request for an URGENT STOP WORK ORDER. It is our position that any work carried out within 100m of the declared Butterfly Cave Aboriginal Place will constitute an act of desecration in breach of Section 86 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.
The request was issued last week with a response requested by 5pm on 11 October 2016. I have posted the letter from EDO on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/1ButterflyCave/
We strongly believe that it becoming increasing difficult for the Government to justify their position on the Awabakal Butterfly Cave. It is impossible to ignore the negligence of OEH in failing to protect the Butterfly Cave bushland when applying the "protection" of an Aboriginal Place Declaration. It is impossible to for the developer to assure the community 100% that NO physical damage will result from heavy earth-moving equipment working 20m from the Cave.
It is equally impossible for Awabakal women to surrender to the greed and hypocrisy of the NSW Lib Government/Roche Group/Developer blockade.
It is 12 months since this petition was initiated. We have amassed thousands of supporters. We have gained TV and radio coverage. We have rallied and chanted and cried. To date we have stopped the developers from working on Stage 7. Can we keep it up?
Too right we can.
We will never back down.
We will be arrested before we see the Cave destroyed.
We will be seeking your support.
And we will never rest until we win.
Finally , I encourage you to support NSW EDO as they have consistently supported our battle to protect Aboriginal culture on Awabakal land. EDO NSW is non-government and not-for-profit legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law and they rely on community support to help fund their programs and services
Thanks as always.
