We have been invited to march at Westlakes NAIDOC. ALL SUPPORTERS ARE WELCOME to attend and women and are encouraged to march to the foreshore behind our banner: SAVE THE BUTTERFLY CAVE. This event will be attended by politicians and media and represents a tremendous opportunity for campaigners to come together in a safe and legal gathering to protest against the loss of Aboriginal cultural heritage in general, and the Awabakal Butterfly Cave in particular. Here is some more info from the organisers: At the Westlakes NAIDOC Family Day this year we celebrate our Songlines, yet we are currently faced with the damage and destruction of one of our most significant sacred cultural sites left in Lake Macquarie – The Butterfly Cave at West Wallsend. The Butterfly Cave was declared an Aboriginal place in 2013 and is important to Aboriginal women as it has welcomed the physical and spiritual presence of Aboriginal women for thousands of years. At this point in time there are no positive outcomes from the developer, the Council or the State Government. Those involved with the struggle to save this significant Aboriginal site in Lake Macquarie will be marching with us at Westlakes NAIDOC, starting at 10.30 am from Toronto Court House to the Foreshore, as we show to the community how important Songlines are to retaining the Aboriginal connection with country. For more information contact 0409902043 or visit www.naidocwestlakes.com We look forward to meeting supporters on the day. And a reminder: ALL WOMEN are welcome to march for the Cave and the day is a celebration of community and culture. Thanks for your continued support. Annie Freer savethebutterflycave@gmail.com
