Share today: As the USDA debates rolling out its reckless high-speed slaughter program nationwide, The Guardian has reported on the high toll of grueling slaughterhouse work on workers themselves: In US meat plants alone, there are two amputations weekly and 17 “severe” incidents each month. Read and tweet the article to tell the USDA that slaughterhouses are no place for a race: http://bit.ly/2ubYMrh! Former COK investigator Scott David’s 2015 investigation of Quality Pork Processors (QPP), considered a model for this high-speed pilot program, revealed gut-wrenching suffering, including pigs being improperly stunned, shocked, dragged and beaten out of view of the few government inspectors, as workers rushed to keep up with line speeds. And the USDA’s proposed expansion of this high-speed pilot program could only put animals and workers at higher risk. Under this program, the presence of government-trained inspectors would be scaled back, while slaughter lines would be sped up – saving the USDA over $6 million per year, according to The Guardian – but at the expense of animals, workers, and consumers. The Guardian reports horrifying specific injuries suffered by meat plant workers, such as a worker having to have his arm surgically amputated after it was pulled into a cubing machine, and another being knocked off of a hydrolyzer, breaking a bone over his eye and suffering first- and second-degree burns. According to Amanda Hitt from the Food Integrity Campaign, “Increased line speeds pose a real threat to workers. In addition to heinous injuries resulting from speed such as amputations and physical injury, … repetition puts the worker at risk [of] debilitating musculoskeletal problems.” Join us TODAY in telling the USDA to put the brakes on this dangerous program!
