Earlier this year, Laura joined other top athletes like NBA All-Star Metta World Peace and Olympian and activist Dotsie Bausch in a new COK ad series telling the USDA that although sports stars are meant to be fast, high-speed slaughter is dangerous and cruel. In today’s video, Laura explained that the pilot program is “creating more inhumane conditions, more abuse of animals--and add to that the conditions that the workers have to deal with.” Expanding the high-speed pilot program would threaten the welfare of millions of pigs, consumers, and workers nationwide. COK’s investigation of Quality Pork Processors, considered a model plant for the expansion of the program, exposed egregious cruelty, as well as pigs covered in feces or pus-filled abscesses processed for human consumption. The footage reveals pigs being shocked, dragged, and improperly stunned as workers rushed to keep up with the slaughterhouse’s fast pace.
