Encourage NT Government to support Land for Wildlife Top End with resources or finances

We the undersigned are either members or friends of The Land for Wildlife Top End program. We believe that programs such as this, supporting landholders to manage wildlife habitat and promoting awareness and protection of native flora and fauna species are really important to our community. We are signing because we believe such programs are truly valuable and need support from government, through finance or other resources.

Land for Wildlife Top End is a program which supports wildlife habitat by promoting conservation, land management and wildlife awareness and education. Landholders voluntarily conserve wildlife habitat on their land and are actively involved in on ground land management activities.

The program assists landholder networking, capacity building  and habitat enhancement as well as citizen science programs. Additionally the program promotes conservation, land management and wildlife awareness and education in the wider community with several schools and public areas being involved.

Recently LFW has worked with a focus on threatened species, in particular to protect the Black-footed Tree-rat in particular, helping landholders to install 175 nest and over 19000 plants to provide food and habitat for the endangered species, as well as engaging in the monitoring of arboreal mammals with motion sensing cameras.

For the past 9 years we are very grateful that the program has received core funding to cover a part time coordinator, vehicle and office, which has been funded through NT Parks and Wildlife. Sadly as of July 2019 this is no longer funded.

Commitment from landholders will continue but further resourcing is required for the program to continue and expand.
