Forbid in-person classes to students who have not gotten their COVID results at NMU

The Issue

This coming Monday at Northern Michigan University, in-person classes are going to take place. However, at the time of writing, 16 students have confirmed cases of COVID-19. In addition, mandatory COVID-19 tests for all students and staff have only begun recently. Not every student has gotten their results back. As a result, Northern Michigan University won't know how many students carry COVID-19 by the time classes start.

Many students, professors, and alumni of Northern Michigan University agree that it is too dangerous to hold in person classes at Northern Michigan University until all the test results are in and the University knows exactly how many carriers of COVID-19 are among the student body.

By barring the students lacking a negative test result from classes and on-campus buildings, Northern Michigan University would greatly reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission among staff, students, and faculty. All absences from class would be considered excused absences. The choice for what to do with late work would be left to the person or people usually accountable for that choice in the event of an excused absence. Please consider signing and helping keep our community safe.
