Save Bushmills Education Centre
The Issue
Bushmills Education Centre
Bushmills Education Centre is a fully staffed multi-purpose Centre operating under the auspices of the Education Authority. The building which was originally Bushmills Grammar School is located on the outskirts of Bushmills, just over a mile from the North Coast, and is one of the best equipped Residential Centres in Northern Ireland. The centre has positive links with the local community and is seen as beneficial to the community in Bushmills.
Mission Statement
'To provide a residential facility where a variety of curriculum related programmes and resources are offered, primarily in the field of outdoor education, designed to meet the needs of both young people and adults.'
The majority of courses offered to schools and youth organisations are residential, using the resources of the outdoor environment to achieve their educational objectives. The centre has a comprehensive range of outdoor activity equipment and vessels and a fully equipped field studies laboratory. The centre's north coast geographic location allows for easy access to local sites suitable for both field work and outdoor adventure activities.
Programmes are on offer at Bushmills Education Centre for schools and youth organisations from all over Co. Antrim & Co. Londonderry which allow groups the opportunity to experience adventure education which helps young people to develop personally and socially. Skills such as safety awareness, self-awareness, developing a sense of responsibility and conservation are just a few of the educational aims staff try to incorporate into programmes at the centre. Young people engage in programmes which encourage achievement, enjoyment, learning and satisfaction. Programmes allow young people to learn to co-operate and work closely with others whilst encouraging independence, self-confidence and lasting friendships and relationships.
Bushmills Education Centre also run many adult leader and teacher training courses which allow adults to develop the skills and knowledge to encourage and lead groups of young people safely in the outdoors, eg, Duke of Edinburgh/President Award, hill walking and canoeing.
The proposal to close this centre would affect 18 employees and would be a loss to the schools and user groups who frequently participate in fun and educational experiences at Bushmills Education Centre.
