Save NAU's Suzuki Program!

The Issue

Northern Arizona University hosts 18 community classes a semester to teach children in the Flagstaff area Suzuki Strings https://nau.edu/cal/community-programs/community-music-and-dance-academy/suzuki-strings/  The program is a staple in the community, performing for roughly 3-15 Flagstaff events, parades, tree lighting, concerts, and yearly celebrations.  Suzuki students can begin study around age 5, and many high school and college Suzuki students perform with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra!

In addition, Dr. Louise Scott is a certified American Suzuki Association Teacher Trainer and leads multiple courses at the university for undergraduate and graduate students.  Students taking Suzuki Pedagogy can major in violin, viola, or cello, and graduate with their degree in Suzuki Pedagogy and/or certified to teach Suzuki Books 1-10, and/or Music Mind Games, depending on their years of participation in the program while attending NAU.  https://nau.edu/music/degrees/undergraduate-programs/suzuki-pedagogy-certificate/  Full participation at the undergraduate level requires 15 units of Suzuki study, but these students are in jeopardy of having to change their majors.  Only 11 universities in the country offer Suzuki training as a degree https://suzukiassociation.org/events/colleges/

With COVID19 budget cuts, this extremely influential and successful program is at risk of being cut altogether.  Please help rally to support and preserve these programs.  It is possible some of the Suzuki Professors may be fired due to NAU budget cuts!  Share this petition, contact President Rita Chang, the Dean Griffin of the College of Arts and Letters, Director Sullivan of the School of Music, and others at Northern Arizona University and in Flagstaff.
