Gov. Roy Cooper Reopen NC Churches and Commerce

The Issue

Although we realize that there are many concerns associated with the governmental response to Covid-19, the infringements upon the First Amendment is a concern that must be taken seriously. If we allow our fundamental rights to be taken by any entity, then we falsely assume that our rights come from a source other than our creator. We must never allow a person or a government to assume the place of God.

In response to governmental overreach in the area of personal liberty and the free exercise of religion, as clearly outlined in the Constitution of the United States of America, we are calling for the immediate restoration of commerce, worship, and interaction as deemed fit by the free people of the State of North Carolina.

Being part of a free nation comes with responsibilities, not the least of which is bearing the consequences of each decision. As grave as this responsibility may be, it pales in comparison to the prospect of abdicating the freedoms to make choices that impact our lives most directly. We are asking you to trust the citizens of our state and nation to assume responsibility for their own well-being. Relinquishing these individual responsibilities to a government or another is not, by definition, freedom. Some would have us believe that freedom would certainly equal death. We must not accept this false premise. Freedom to live life as one deems fit, whether staying at home, assembling to worship, or providing for one’s family, is a freedom worth preserving under any circumstances.

We are asking you to affirm the self-evident truths of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness by immediately removing all mandatory limitations on religious gatherings and places of business.
