North Babylon Library Needs a New Director
The Issue
On September 16th , 2025 , we attended the monthly board meeting at the North Babylon Public Library.
At the meeting, the community was shocked and horrified when the librarians told their stories about the sexual harassment and verbal abuse they have encountered from their Director. One of the employees has resigned it was getting so bad, with others considering it for their safety. It broke the heart of every community member at that meeting, but we are so proud that these workers had the courage to come forward.
One of the concerns is the retaliation that will happen (and already has) to these employees. They have been working in a hostile environment which makes it more difficult to perform their jobs effectively.
Not only is the Director verbally abusive to his staff, but also to the patrons of the library. Many have witnessed his actions over the years and they are counter effective and work against the community. Most of the staff and patrons of the library requests are ignored or told there are no funds available, however there are funds that are not being utilized for programs, books, updating the Children's room, etc. He often speaks of his "Golden Parachute" when he retires which has caused concern.
Our library should be a pleasant place and provide a diverse and welcoming environment that meets the need of all people in our community. We cannot achieve these goals with a Director working against his staff and the community. The staff is caring and dedicated to make our library our better place , but they can’t do that under the current leadership.
At this point, we the community are asking that the Board remove the Director and appoint an interim director in charge while these allegations are being investigated to protect the brave employees who spoke out. They should want the library to be a safe and welcoming environment to all.
We also need more N.B. citizens to come to the Board meetings to voice their concerns. The meetings are held in the library every third Tuesday of the month at 6 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for October 21st.
