Monday 11 April at 10 am there is a special council meeting at County Hall, Norwich. We're asking the chair to accept the motion below under urgent business. Because of the timing and as the alternative would be a costly extra council meeting if we forced one, we hope it will be accepted and we can present this petition as part of it. It costs a few thousand pounds and lots of staff time to put on council meetings. We don't want to spend money on unnecessary meetings that could be used to feed hungry children. Maybe sense will prevail?

Watch out for more updates but if you're free on Monday 11th, especially if you have children, and would like to join us in making the point to the Conservatives who have the majority on the council, please hold the date. We're not anticipating any rowdy demonstration - more a petition and picnic first thing in the morning to make the point. Those who we would love to see there almost certainly won't be able to spend the money required for fuel or fares so we're looking at a dignified gathering rather than mass protest.

Here's the motion we want to put - please keep sharing the petition. You're being amazing. The feedback we're getting is that those struggling are taking heart from your support. Thank you

Moved by Cllr Mike Smith-Clare Seconded Cllr Emma Corlett

‘Council welcomes the concern for families struggling to feed their children reflected in the petition calling for the reinstatement of school holiday vouchers for those receiving free school meals during term time.

Council recognises that holiday activity fund activities are inaccessible to many who can’t afford travel costs, the places and days available are just a fraction of what would be required to meet the numbers needing support, and largely unsuitable for those with additional needs.

Council welcomes the availability of the Norfolk Assistance Scheme for those experiencing hardship because of spiralling fuel, food and other costs. Council further encourages residents to phone 01603 223392 or contact their county councillor if they need help.

Council believes that struggling families should not have to rely on discretionary payments when those in receipt of free school meals have already shown they qualify for help.

Council therefore calls on cabinet to urgently reintroduce the voucher scheme backdated to cover the Easter school holidays.’
