Giant all consuming Eastern Shore Mining Project gains more steam! Ohh N0

These slides talk about a full on investment attack on our Eastern Shore with their gold mining plans.  The world sure is a different place now.  This new proposed project would see seventy five 38 tonne trucks one way everyday  traveling from Old Mitchell Mine (Previously Cochrane Hill) to the 15-Mile Processing Mine site which is 75 km's away. 

The route has not been disclosed yet but could be one of these three:  

a.      Number 7 highway through Sherbrooke, Ecum Secum, Moser River, Port Dufferin and Beaver Harbour and then North on the 374

b.      Highway 348 through Melrose, Glenelg, Smithfield, Caledonia, Cameron Settlement and Trafalgar’s 374.  

c.      Number 7 highway through Aspen 347 onto Old Church Road across Westside St. Mary’s Bridge and through the Liscomb Game sanctuary.

The trucking route and the companies lack of disclosure is one of many issues we have been learning about with this new fast paced mega project! 

While St. Barbara is the Giant in this fight we are the David's.  One David that came out of no where that I am absolutely astonished by is Professor Baran Karsak.  Professor Karsak is new to the area and is now teaching at StFX in the sociology department.  Over the summer he has come to find out more and more about the Giant 15-Mile Processing hub project and took it upon himself to write this brilliant report.  Please take a few moments to read it - Professor Baran Karsak report link here:  https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14648/66222

Professor Baran Karsak's recent report on, "The Social Impacts of Gold Mining on Rural Communities" draws many parallel lines to the  last municipal funded Economic Impact Analysis.  That analysis basically told us, "we take all the risk with little to no economic benefits!"

On Wednesday Sept 2 2026 St. Mary's Municipal Council voted in favor of funding a new Economic Impact Analysis with municipal staff investigating now!

We are now anxiously awaiting the federal regulator's decision on weather this mega project will be assessed federally or move onto the less stringent provincial assessment.  

For the sake of Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore lets all pray for the full federal assessment!
