No Weight Bully Rule

The Issue

As a lifelong boxing enthusiast, I have watched countless bouts where fighters, in pursuit of an advantage, severely dehydrate themselves to meet weight class requirements, only to rehydrate drastically after the weigh-in. This not only poses significant health risks to the athletes but also undermines the spirit of competitive fairness. It’s time we bring meaningful change to the sport we all love.

Boxing commissions and sanctioning bodies need to establish a rehydration limit of 10% of the division weight limit as a standardized protocol across all weight divisions. This measure would ensure that fighters compete more safely and fairly, reflecting their natural weight classes rather than a potentially dangerous and manipulated state. According to research from the Association of Boxing Commissions, extreme weight cuts followed by significant rehydration can lead to severe health repercussions, including brain injuries and other complications from electrolyte imbalances.

Furthermore, the current vagueness around 'catchweights' in matchmaking often leads to unfair advantages and disputes, detracting from the integrity of the sport. By setting 'catchweights' as a nonnegotiable weight limit, we can create clear guidelines that benefit the sport and protect its athletes. This move will not only align with already successful weight management practices in other combat sports like Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) but also enhance the transparency and consistency that boxing needs.

Boxing organizations such as the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO, along with respective athletic commissions, have the power to implement these changes. It’s crucial for the safety and fairness of boxing to address these issues head-on. Fighters deserve to perform in optimal health without compromising their safety or competitive integrity for weigh-in gains.

Sign this petition to urge those in power to take action and uphold the values of safety, fairness, and integrity in boxing. Let us protect the fighters and preserve the true essence of the sport.
