The Issue

After the recent realignment study, a new alignment option emerged: Option 3. This option would modify the downtown segment of the Calgary Green Line to be street-running, with constant intersection crossings and even track crossings providing for a slow and unreliable experience comprable to the sluggish Toronto Streetcar.

This option was proposed in order to prevent backlash from a small minority, despite 65 per cent of Calgarians supporing elevated rail through downtown, according to a public survey. Furthermore, opposition to elevated rail often comes from comparisons to American elevated rail systems, most of which are over a century old. Modern elevated rail has since emerged to be quiet and non-distruptive.

The Calgary City Council and the Executive Committee are set to vote on the realignment following a review on September 8th. They will likely be compelled to vote for Option 3 due to its relative cost-effectiveness.  Do not let them be fooled, as this would significantly cripple a critical project for Calgary's future. Keeping the original alignment should be the preferred option, and even spending more for an elevated alignment is preferable to botching the project with street running.
