David Crawford was just 17 years old when he was murdered by then 16 year old Federico Luis Cruz in 1996. Cruz decapitated, mutilated, and filmed his body. In 1997, Cruz was sentenced to life without parole. However, following a legal ruling stating that juvenile offenders cannot be sentenced to life in prison, and extensive litigation, Cruz is slated to walk a free man as early as March 2025. The sheer brutality and sadistic nature of the crime, coupled with how young Cruz was, should keep him behind bars for life. Cruz claims he regrets killing Crawford, and the defense claimed that his history of childhood abuse was a factor in the crime, but given the antisocial nature of the crime he is set to be released for, it can be deduced that he may not truly possess the capacity for remorse.  Therefore, he must remain behind bars for the rest of his life, as to keep the communities around him safe. If he is released and then goes on to commit another savage murder, then the Kent County Judge Mark Trusock will have blood on his hands. Releasing violent offenders early often has tragic consequences. For example, convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido was released after serving 11 years for the kidnapping and rape of Katie Colloway. He would then go on to commit one of the most infamous crimes in US history; the kidnapping rape and captivity of Jaycee Lee Dugard. Her 18 years of isolation and anguish were a direct result of the undeserved leniency that freed Garrido in the first place. Cases like these serve as a painful reminder of the consequences of overlenience in the judicial system. While it is understandable to make the decision based on the age of the defendant at the time of the crime, his background, and his changed behavior, the crime he committed poses as far too great of a risk to ignore. I strongly urge everyone who sees this to sign this petition to urge Judge Trusock, the Kent County attorney general, the Kent County prosecutor, the Michigan Department of Corrections, and the state of Michigan to reverse the decision made and prevent his release. This situation is a ticking time bomb, as any delayed action will increase the chance that Cruz is freed and given the opportunity to strike again.
