No More Than Four Storeys in Downtown Grimsby
The Issue
✍️ PETITION: Protect Downtown Grimsby – No More Than Four Storeys!
We, the undersigned residents of Grimsby, call on Mayor Jordan and Grimsby's Town Council, our MPP Sam Oosterhoff, and our MP Dean Allison to protect the future of our community by upholding the long-standing four-storey height limit in downtown Grimsby.
Why This Matters:
Downtown Grimsby is the heart of our town — a place defined by its small-town charm, character, and walkable streets. It is where neighbours meet, families gather, and our community identity thrives.
But that character is now at risk. The proposed Ontario/John development hints at a ~15-storey tower in the core of our downtown — more than triple the maximum height permitted under current planning guidelines.
Council has already stretched the rules before, approving taller buildings against resident concerns. If we allow one ~15-storey tower, it sets a precedent that could transform our town centre into a corridor of high-rises resembling Mississauga. Once that change happens, there is no going back.
Our Concerns:
- Loss of Character: A 15-storey tower would overshadow historic streets and erase the small-town feel that makes Grimsby unique.
- Traffic & Parking: Ontario Street is already a bottleneck. Adding another high-rise will only make congestion worse.
- Infrastructure Costs: Water, sewage, and road upgrades for high-density towers don’t come free — taxpayers foot the bill.
- Lack of Transparency: Residents are being shown glossy marketing instead of real details: no confirmed height disclosures, no traffic or parking studies, no answers.
The Demand:
We demand that Grimsby Town Council uphold the four-storey maximum height limit for downtown Grimsby and reject any proposal that exceeds it.
This is about more than one building — it’s about preserving the future of our community.
Why We Must Act Now:
If we don’t speak up, we’ll never be able to say we tried. Once high-rise towers are approved, downtown Grimsby will be permanently changed. We must stand together and fight the “Mississaugization” of our town.
Call to Action:
Sign this petition to show that Grimsbonians want responsible growth that protects our small-town character. Let’s present this to Town Hall, MPP Sam Oosterhoff, and MP Dean Allison with one clear message:
