My eleven year-old daughter is a two-time cancer survivor. I believe the contamination from the Santa Susana Field Lab caused her cancer. She’s one of fifty kids with rare forms of cancer in our community.
Right now the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is in closed door negotiations with Boeing to cut a deal that would vastly weaken the Santa Susana Field Lab’s cleanup. We think they’ll announce the results any day.
Governor Newsom can stop the deal that will allow dangerous contamination to reach our community.
If the deal goes through then we will lose the comprehensive cleanup of one of California’s most toxic sites, and the site of one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns. Boeing’s deal could allow them to leave up to 99% of the contamination on site. Permanently. They’ll claim their version of the cleanup would make it safe for people to live there, but it would be a lie.
Right now the SSFL is so dangerous that in some areas that 90 out of 100 people would get cancer if they lived on the SSFL and ate the produce they grew there. That’s data from Boeing’s own study. If Boeing leaves most of the soil and water contaminated there’s no way it would be safe for people to live there. And my family and I live nearby! It won’t be safe for us either.
The DTSC is Governor Newsom’s agency, he appointed Dr. Meredith Williams to be the DTSC director. Governor Newsom can stop the deal and protect our community.
