Linda Parks, of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, is soft spoken and quick to smile. But she is also a fighter, and has advocated for the 100% cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL), one of America’s worst nuclear accidents, for years. Last week, she successfully introduced a motion for the Board of Supervisors to send a letter to NASA with their official position that NASA must fully cleanup its area at SSFL, as promised.
Sheila Khuel, of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, is not a lady to be swayed by corrupt agencies or greedy corporations. She’s been a staunch supporter of the complete cleanup for many years. She led a similar motion to send a letter stating LA’s Board of Supervisors also supports the 100% cleanup of SSFL. Supervisor Khuel understands that over 2,000,000 children are relying on her to protect them from the SSFL’s radioactive and nuclear waste.
Both NASA and the Department of Energy have recently announced that they don’t intend to honor their 2010 legal “AOC” clean up obligations and instead plan to leave as much as 100% of their radioactive waste and cancer-causing waste on site. The site is surrounded by adult and pediatric cancer clusters. To leave ANY of it would be irresponsible. Recklessly dangerous. Inhumane.
I know letters don’t seem like much in this age of protests and boycotts, but these weren’t just letters, they were official comments on NASA’s Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. They have legal weight. It’s now on file that both Boards clearly said that the “2010 AOC” cleanup must be followed. No matter how much money NASA and the Dept. of Energy throw at their lawyers, they can’t cover up the paper trail of unwavering support for the complete cleanup from the two counties most affected by the site.
That’s powerful.
Will you take a moment to email Supervisor Linda Parks and Supervisor Sheila Khuel and thank them for taking such a strong stance to protect kids by demanding the 100% cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Lab? It’s the least we can do for all their hard work.
