In the 2014 video clip, an official from the Department of Energy promises to uphold the 2010 agreement that the agency would 100% cleanup the site of one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns, the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL).
But last month, the Department of Energy published their final report that states they will entirely abandon the AOC agreement they signed in 2010 and instead will leave 98% of the contamination on site. The Department of Energy wants to walk away from cleaning up most of the contaminated groundwater in their area at SSFL too.
Their new cleanup proposal not only breaks their legal commitments and violates environmental law, but most of all they know their actions will continue to harm our community. They intend to leave 98% of the chemical and radioactive contamination permanently, only miles from our homes.
They know we have suffered thyroid conditions, autoimmune diseases, and above average incidence rates of cancer. Still, the Department of Energy continues to deceive the public with misinformation and lies as they push forward with their reckless and dangerous cleanup proposal.
If we don't stand together and make our voices heard, our community will always have the potential to be exposed to nuclear and chemical carcinogens. Today, Sunday the 27th, is the last day to send your comment in to the Department of Energy!
Many thanks,
Melissa Bumstead, Parents vs SSFL
P.S. After this we'll have to pressure the DTSC to hold Boeing, the Department of Energy and NASA accountable to their cleanup commitments, but we're strong enough to do it!
