I want to thank those of you who called California Governor Gavin Newsom this week. Because of your calls, we learned that he has not yet selected a new director for the Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC). We were also told that our requests for the new director should be made in writing and sent via his website.
It’s critical that we flood Newsom’s inbox with requests TODAY! If he doesn’t appoint a strong reformer to be the DTSC Director, we will lose the 100% cleanup of one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns, the Santa Susana Field Lab. Not only that, but communities near the dozens of other toxic environmental disasters across California will also continue to suffer without anyone to advocate for them.
Tomorrow might be too late, please take a moment now to follow this link to email the new governor. (Select Environmental Issues/Concerns as “subject.”)
In your comment you could say: The public wants a new DTSC director who will totally reform that broken agency. This person should have no ties to polluters (like Boeing), and instead of being pro-polluter, this person will be pro-people and will invite community members into the discussions. The ideal director will have the integrity to enforce cleanup agreements using the safest methods and most protective standards. With this new reforming director, the Santa Susana Field Lab cleanup, as well as many other toxic disasters across CA, will finally be safe.
