Marana is a thriving community:  a place where we chat outside with our neighbors, where our children attend school, where we buy our groceries, where we can enjoy walks along the beautiful Loop, take our family to the park for sports, and go to church and work.  In summary, this is the community where we have chosen to build our lives.  We have experienced growth over the past few years with amazing new restaurants and businesses coming to Marana. Most recently, we have seen the addition of a beautiful Marana Aquatic and Recreation Center and a brand-new shopping center.  Right down the road from these two new thriving spaces, Management and Training Corporation (MTC) is planning to open an ICE Detention Center.   If this is allowed to happen, all the progress we have made as a community would be in danger. ICE already has a presence in Tucson. If this detention center opens, ICE would dramatically increase its activity in the area, including their abhorrent actions of ripping families apart and denying community members due process.

Management and Training Corporation (MTC) has a history of inhumane practices both for their workers and those housed in their facilities. In Arizona specifically, they had such horrible conditions that a riot was started.  There was high staff turnover, broken air conditioning and cameras, lack of guard training, and numerous fines issued against MTC for lack of staff and poor labor conditions. These fines resulted in no improvement to the facility.  In the end, MTC’s contracts were ended by the State of Arizona. 

There is also a proven lack of local oversight for ICE detention centers across the country, so the Marana Town Council would not be able to intervene and protect those within its midst from the dangerous conditions that MTC allows.  Therefore, the town council MUST stop this ICE detention center before it begins.

Every single one of us has the right to be part of this amazing community without fear for our own and our neighbors’ lives.

We ask the Marana Town Council to do everything within their power as our elected town representatives to protect their citizens and STOP this facility from opening.
