The issue

We are proud banana growers based in New South Wales, Australia, and are part of a community that stretches across the nation. Our commitment to providing Australians with safe and delicious bananas runs deep in our hearts and livelihoods. However, the recent proposal by the Australian Government  (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - DAFF) to conduct a biosecurity imports risk assessment (BIRA)  for bananas from the Philippines poses a significant and serious threat to our local industry and the livelihood of thousands of Aussie farmers.

Australia's banana growers have consistently met the high standards of quality and safety that our consumers deserve and expect. Our local industry is not only a cornerstone of the rural economy but also a source of Australian pride. However, the introduction of bananas from the Philippines, a country with different agricultural practices and less stringent biosecurity regulations, will jeopardise this. The potential introduction of diseases and pests not currently found in Australia is a grave concern. Diseases such as Moko, and Black Sigatoga (prevalent in Phillipine Banabs farms and not present in Australia)  could devastate our crops and permanently damage an industry that supports so many Australian families.

The Philippine banana industry is significantly different from our own, and importing their produce will undercut the market, making it more difficult for Australian growers to compete. The Australian banana supply chain—from farmers to transporters and retailers—is carefully balanced and relies heavily on the consistent quality and supply from local farms. WE GROW ENOUGH BANANAS IN OUR NATION FEED OUR NATION!

We implore the Australian government to support its local banana industry by investing in our farmers and biosecurity measures rather than opening the market to international competitors that do not adhere to the same stringent standards. This means reallocating resources to enhance our local agricultural practices and fortifying our biosecurity systems to ensure that we are not left vulnerable to external threats.

We call upon every Australian, consumers and producers alike, to stand with us in protecting the future of the Aussie banana farming industry. By signing this petition, you support the livelihoods of countless families working tirelessly to provide quality produce. We demand that the Australian government halts this risk assessment process and maintains a steadfast commitment to our local growers.

Please sign this petition to safeguard our industry, protect Australian jobs, and ensure the continued availability of safe and high-quality locally grown bananas for all future generations.
