Yesterday (9 Feb 2026), the **Northern Ireland Assembly debated a Private Members’ Motion on the need for commissioned ADHD services here in Northern Ireland. This motion, brought forward by Sinn Féin and supported by MLAs from across the Assembly, called on the Health Minister to:

✨ Recognise the urgent need for dedicated, properly commissioned ADHD services

✨ Support a regional diagnosis service and ADHD-specific mental health support

✨ Address long wait times for diagnosis

✨ Improve awareness across government, schools and workplaces

✨ Encourage engagement between the Department of Health and Health and Social Care Trusts on how to make it happen 💡

The motion received very positive support from MLAs from multiple parties — including Alliance — and there was no opposition to the principle of commissioning ADHD services. That means there’s an encouraging cross-community consensus that action is needed. 🙌 

Importantly, the Health Minister has confirmed that the long-awaited ADHD needs assessment — which will help shape how services are commissioned — is with Department officials and expected to be published in the next few days. Once that report is published, it will be a key step towards planning and resourcing commissioned services here. We’re told publication should be imminent.
