En México, el conejo ocupa el tercer lugar como el animal más abandonado y el primer lugar como el animal más maltratado.

Esto debido al fácil acceso de la compra/venta/adopciones de conejos los cuales se venden en redes sociales, veterinarias, tiendas de accesorios de mascotas, forrajerias o en tianguis, los cuales están siempre en malas condiciones en jaulas, huacales, cartones, cajas de plástico y estos seres pisan sobre la jaula oxidada o la madera sin tallar y se lesionan provocandose una pododermatitis, asimismo no son alimentados con heno de alfalfa en el caso de los gazapos (conejos bebés) o con heno de avena en conejos adultos, solo les dan un trozo de zanahoria la cual contiene oxalatos qué son dañinos para la salud del conejo, al igual que cilantro sin desinfectar, de igual forma se tienen en el pleno sol sin ninguna sombra o en el hacinamiento en las jaulas sin ventilación, amontonados con demás conejos y otras especies como las cobayas o hamster o en un aparador de cristal en tiendas de accesorios de mascota como Petco donde abajo están los ratones pinkys los cuales son buscados por herpentistas, habiendo un inminente peligro para los conejos al ser comprados como alimento para reptiles, perros, gatos, leones, cocodrilos, tiburones, consumo humano o rituales de origen africano/cubano. 

En grupos de facebook, aproximadamente 200 publicaciones diarias se reportan en todos los grupos de conejos en nuestro país dandolos en adopción bajo la excusa de "con el dolor de mi corazón doy conejo de "X" meses o años y entrego en "tal estación del metro de la CDMX", a lo cual, son en su mayoría entregados sin esterilizar, con enfermedades, en malas condiciones físicas, sin recibir agua o alimento y con evidentes rasgos de maltrato al tener comportamientos agresivos con humanos u otros conejos / especies, al no existir protocolos ni filtros, grupos de personas dedicados a la cunicultura, a la compra/venta de animales en criadero para consumo o para mascota, personas con reptiles o animales carnívoros hacen trato con las personas que dan en adopción a los conejos, usando su perfil real con acceso restringido, usando un perfil falso de mujer o anciana, usando un perfil con más fotos de conejos copiadas de otras redes sociales o perfiles sin foto de perfil, acto seguido, entregan el conejo y muchas veces quien lo recibe bloquea al anterior dueño y se han reportado muchos casos de personas dedicadas al herpentismo qué usan esta táctica y así obtienen conejos de forma gratuita. Las personas que entregan a los conejos son en su mayoría mujeres que ya no tienen el tiempo para dedicarlo a estos seres, otras personas por falta de espacio y otras porque esperan la llegada de un hijo o adquirieron un perro o tienen perros y gatos.

Por eso hago esta petición para que a través de los partidos qué tienen mayoría calificada como lo son los de la coalición Seguimos Haciendo Historia, integrados por Morena, Partido Verde Ecologista de México y Partido del Trabajo, pedirles, de manera respetuosa y atenta, que en una próxima reforma a la ley del Medio Ambiente y en las leyes secundarias en materia de protección a los animales, la siguiente petición:

1. Prohibir el consumo de carne de conejo. Al ser el tercer animal con más presencia en hogares, su carácter de mascota ya esta tomando mayor relevancia y este animal es un compañero en hogares incluso como terapia emocional, estos seres sintientes han sido abusados para consumo, explotación, pruebas y venta indiscriminada y esto representa para el Estado Mexicano una vergonzosa mancha imborrable en materia de protección animal, mientras se voltea a atender a perros y gatos, los conejos están quedando al olvido y en muchos hogares y refugios al no tener la garantía del Estado en materia de bienestar animal, se esta dejando pasar la oportunidad de darles dignidad a los conejos, al evitar el consumo de carne de conejo, se cerrarán granjas cuniculas, veterinarias clandestinas, se perseguirá de oficio este tipo de maltrato animal, al igual que a personas que participen en la comisión del delito en malas adopciones a estos seres.

2. Prohibir la venta de conejos: Al Prohibir la venta de conejos, se estará garantizando la protección del conejo como una especie protegida, otorgando garantías qué un Estado procurador de bienestar animal debe dar, tal como atención veterinaria con veterinarios de exóticos, medicamentos y vacunas con accesibilidad, campañas en redes sociales y en tv del Canal del Congreso y en spots del Congreso de la Unión anunciando qué el conejo pasa a ser ya oficialmente una especie protegida y con derechos como los tienen los perros y gatos, al evitar su venta, el sufrimiento quedara mancillado, ya qué en la actualidad el conejo es dado en venta para consumo, mala tenencia, maltrato y hacinamiento en jaulas, experimentos, cuando esta demostrado que los conejos son seres inteligentes, sintientes, con personalidad y aportan a la ecología dado a que su huella de carbono es menor comparada a otras especies.

3. Prohibir las malas adopciones: Se requiere una reforma donde se sancionen y se persiga, asi tambien como tipificar como delito el maltrato animal las adopciones sin filtro, aquellas donde el conejo acaba en malas manos y que mediante inteligencia se acaben con las redes de personas dedicadas al maltrato, venta, herpentismo, consumo y cacería.

4. Fomentar una nueva cultura: A la población le toca un cambio de perspectiva hacia los conejos, debemos entender que otros paises ya están dando ejemplo en protección a los conejos como Suiza y Reino Unido, nosotros podemos ir a la vanguardia en el continente americano, incluso hace unos años, se prohibió qué el conejo fuese usado en experimentos de laboratorio, el entonces Senador Ricardo Monrreal Avila fue quien llevó al pleno esta iniciativa y fue votada en su mayoría a favor. Pasos así se requieren en este país para fomentar los cuidados y protección a los conejos. Retomando también aquellas iniciativas como la del entonces Diputado Local Jesús Sesma donde expresó en su iniciativa Prohibir venta de conejos, hamster, cobayas en tianguis y en mercados o la célebre frase del ex candidato Jorge Álvarez Maynez "Qué los conejos puedan vivir libres" esto al terminar el primer debate presidencial. 

5. Promover campañas de esterilización, atención veterinaria exótica, colaboración con la sociedad civil encargada de refugios y rescates: Muchos hogares, en su mayoría, de interés social, como el refugio Mi Mascota Bunny de Tijuana, acondicionaron su hogar para tener más de 50 conejos rescatados de maltratos, consumo, malas adopciones, abandonos y ellos con sus propios recursos han costeado consultas de veterinarios especialistas en animales exóticos y el promedio de costó de consulta ronda los 500 pesos por conejo, más medicamentos, más estudios de rayos X o ultrasonidos o análisis, asímismo la adquisición de heno de marca Oxbow el cual una paca de 2.4 kg ronda los 600 pesos, pellets de esta misma marca de 2.1 kg con costó aproximado de 400 pesos. Todos estos costos son absorbidos por voluntarios, personas dedicadas al rescate, con recursos propios o donativos los cuales llegan a ser escasos y sobre todo el tiempo dedicado al alto mantenimiento qué representa cuidar conejos. Se requiere qué las autoridades hagan verdaderos refugios para estos seres, haya participación de la sociedad civil junto con gobierno, para financiar, apoyar y atender esta causa.

6. Guardia Nacional cuente con una división de rescate animal y no sea indiferente con conejos: En los próximos años, será necesaria una división de inteligencia dedicada al rescate y salvamento de animales, en especial aquellos en condiciones de calle, maltratados en hogares o veterinarias o inclusive en granjas. Al hacer esto, la población qué padezca de un extravío, robo, sea testigo de un maltrato animal, cuente con una Guardia Nacional y esta cuente con una división de protección animal, con la asesoría de profepa y especialistas. 

7. Audiencia publica con las autoridades: Solicitamos una audiencia publica con las autoridades para abordar este tema de forma sensible ya qué no puede quedar a la deriva, de manera respetuosa, pedir a los diputados locales y federales qué tomen en cuenta nuestra petición, así como los poderes ejecutivo municipales, estatales y federal y el poder judicial.

8. Antecedente para proteger a más especies: No solo los conejos son la especie mas maltratada, al igual día a día muchas aves callejeras como lo son las palomas, colibríes, urracas y pájaros callejeros son victimas de maltrato, desde el niño que corre desesperadamente a aplastarlos con sus pies, hasta aquellos que a propósito echan veneno a los migajones o pedazos de tortilla en las banquetas o avientan los desperdicios a mitad de calle adrede para ocasionar la muerte de estas aves siendo aplastadas por las llantas de un vehículo. Se requieren bebederos en las lámparas publicas, sanciones o prision para aquellos que maltraten o maten aves callejeras, árboles frutales en las calles, configurar habitats para aves donde ellas puedan coexistir con la urbanización y se aminoren circunstancias donde se ponga en peligro la vida de las aves. 

Hacemos un llamado respetuoso a que se realicen todos o en su mayoría estas peticiones, somos un país con alta diversidad y esta merece respeto, cuidados y protección.

Ofrecemos disculpas a quien no coincida con nosotros, pero no podemos quedarnos callados. Ya basta.

Este tipo de perfiles en Facebook busca conejos para alimento de serpientes y otros animales carnívoros, ya sea por alimentación o diversión con malicia.

Una activista de la Sociedad Mamá Coneja alerta sobre este perfil de John Gzer, una persona con demencia y malicia buscando conejos para ocasionar su muerte.

Otra usuaria reporta qué hay una mujer en Facebook qué recibe conejos en adopción para ponerlos a la venta.

Otra usuaria reporta qué hay una camada de conejos en constante reproducción y nadie ha esterilizado ni apoyado.

Un usuario advierte qué hay una persona que intercambia objetos por conejos en Guadalajara,  Jalisco.

Una usuaria pone en evidencia la constante venta de conejos, cobayas, hamster, perros, gatos y peces en tianguis, mercados callejeros, mercados públicos, puestos de banqueta tales como Mercado La Merced (Ciudad de México), Mercado de Sonora (Ciudad de México), Barrio de Tepito (Ciudad de México), Mercado de Tacuba (Ciudad de México), Mercado Hidalgo (Puebla), Central de abastos (Puebla) entre otros lugares.

Una usuaria hace un reporte sobre un conejo qué anteriormente tenia dueño y el dueño decidió mandarlo a un rastro de animales, el dueño sigue en completa impunidad.

Es constante ver cómo hay personas que tienen conejos y no tienen los medios económicos para consultas o tratamientos de sus conejos.

Esto sucede a cada 30 minutos, en cada grupo de conejos, de animales o de compra y venta en Facebook en todo México, sin ninguna autoridad, sin ninguna ley y sin ninguna persona con empatia.

In Mexico, the rabbit is the third most abandoned animal and the first most abused animal.

In Facebook groups, approximately 200 daily posts are reported in all rabbit groups in our country giving them up for adoption under the excuse of "with the pain of my heart I give a rabbit of "certain" months or years and deliver it at "such and such a station on the Mexico City subway", to which, they are mostly delivered without being sterilized, with diseases, in poor physical condition, without receiving water or food and with evident signs of abuse by having aggressive behavior with humans or other rabbits / species, as there are no protocols or filters, groups of people dedicated to rabbit farming, to the purchase / sale of animals in breeding for consumption or as pets, people with reptiles or carnivorous animals make deals with people who give rabbits up for adoption, using their real profile with restricted access, using a fake profile of a woman or an elderly person, using a profile with more photos of rabbits copied from other social networks or profiles without a profile photo, immediately after, they deliver the rabbit and many times whoever receives it blocks the previous owner and many cases have been reported of people dedicated to rabbit farming, to the purchase / sale of animals in breeding for consumption or as pets, people with reptiles or carnivorous animals make deals with people who give rabbits up for adoption, using their real profile with restricted access, using a false ... to herpentism who use this tactic and thus obtain rabbits for free. The people who give away the rabbits are mostly women who no longer have the time to dedicate to these beings, other people due to lack of space and others because they are expecting the arrival of a child or acquired a new dog or already have dogs and cats.

That is why I make this request so that through the parties that have a qualified majority in the Congress of the Union, such as those of the coalition We Continue Making History, made up of the Morena Party, the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico and the Labor Party, we ask them, in a respectful and attentive manner, that in a future reform to the Environmental Law and in the secondary laws on animal protection, the following request:

1.Ban the consumption of rabbit meat. Being the third most common animal in homes, its character as a pet is already taking on greater importance and this animal is a companion in homes even as emotional therapy, these sentient beings have been abused for consumption, exploitation, testing and indiscriminate sale and this represents for the Mexican State a shameful indelible stain in terms of animal protection, while it turns to care for dogs and cats, rabbits are being forgotten and in many homes and shelters, not having the State's guarantee in terms of animal welfare, the opportunity to give dignity to rabbits is being missed, by avoiding the consumption of rabbit meat, rabbit farms and clandestine veterinary clinics will be closed, this type of animal abuse will be prosecuted ex officio, as well as people who participate in the commission of the crime in bad adoptions of these beings.

 2. Prohibit the sale of rabbits: By prohibiting the sale of rabbits, the protection of the rabbit as a protected species will be guaranteed, granting guarantees that a State that seeks animal welfare must give, such as veterinary care with exotic veterinarians, medications and vaccines with accessibility, campaigns on social networks and on the Congressional Channel TV and in spots of the Congress of the Union announcing that the rabbit is now officially a protected species and with rights like dogs and cats have, by avoiding its sale, suffering will be tainted, since currently the rabbit is sold for consumption, poor ownership, mistreatment and overcrowding in cages, experiments, when it has been shown that rabbits are intelligent, sentient beings, with personality and contribute to ecology given that their carbon footprint is smaller compared to other species. 

 3. Ban bad adoptions: A reform is required where unfiltered adoptions are punished and pursued, as well as classifying animal abuse as a crime, those where the rabbit ends up in the wrong hands and that through intelligence the networks of people dedicated to abuse, sale, herpentism, consumption and hunting are ended.

4. Promote a new culture: The population needs a change of perspective towards rabbits, we must understand that other countries are already setting an example in the protection of rabbits such as Switzerland and the United Kingdom, we can be at the forefront in the American continent, even a few years ago, the use of rabbits in laboratory experiments was prohibited, the then Senator Ricardo Monrreal Avila was the one who brought this initiative to the plenary and it was voted in favor by the majority. Steps like this are required in this country to promote the care and protection of rabbits. Also taking up those initiatives such as that of the then Local Deputy Jesús Sesma where he expressed in his initiative to prohibit the sale of rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs in flea markets and markets or the famous phrase of the former candidate Jorge Álvarez Maynez "Let the rabbits live free" this at the end of the first presidential debate.

5. Promote sterilization campaigns, exotic veterinary care, collaboration with civil society in charge of shelters and rescues: Many homes, mostly of social interest, such as the Mi Mascota Bunny shelter in Tijuana, conditioned their home to have more than 50 rabbits rescued from abuse, consumption, bad adoptions, abandonment and they have paid for consultations with veterinarians specialized in exotic animals with their own resources and the average cost of consultation is around 500 pesos per rabbit, plus medications, plus X-rays or ultrasounds or analysis, as well as the acquisition of Oxbow brand hay of which a 2.4 kg bale costs around 600 pesos, pellets of this same brand of 2.1 kg with an approximate cost of 400 pesos. 6. The National Guard should have an animal rescue division and not be indifferent to rabbits: In the coming years, an intelligence division dedicated to the rescue and saving of animals will be necessary, especially those living on the streets, mistreated in homes or veterinary clinics or even on farms. By doing this, the population that suffers from a loss, theft, or witnesses animal abuse, should have a National Guard and this should have an animal protection division, with the advice of Profepa and specialists.

7. Public hearing with the authorities: We request a public hearing with the authorities to address this issue in a sensitive manner since it cannot be left adrift. In a respectful manner, we ask local and federal deputies to take into account our request, as well as the municipal, state and federal executive powers and the judicial power.

 8. Background to protect more species: Not only rabbits are the most mistreated species, but also many stray birds such as pigeons, hummingbirds, magpies and stray birds are victims of mistreatment every day, from the child who runs desperately to crush them with his feet, to those who purposely put poison on crumbs or pieces of tortilla on the sidewalks or throw waste in the middle of the street on purpose to cause the death of these birds by being crushed by the tires of a vehicle. Water fountains are required in public lamps, sanctions or prison for those who mistreat or kill stray birds, fruit trees in the streets, setting up habitats for birds where they can coexist with urbanization and circumstances where the life of birds is put in danger are reduced. 

We respectfully call for all or most of these requests to be carried out, we are a country with high diversity and this deserves respect, care and protection.
