No 24/7 Maccas In Crows Nest
The Issue
New updated: 24/7 operating hours have been abandoned in the development application! There's still conflict between the hours council are requiring and the 5am-midnight (every day) requested now in the DA. But it's a great win! Thanks to everyone who has supported this.
Update: it has come to my attention that the proposed McDonald's in Crows Nest will not have toilets! So, if they are open 24/7 we can only imagine what drunk customers will do after getting their food.
Crows Nest residents understand that our suburb is changing. There are many incredible changes, primarily the introduction of the Crows Nest Metro station and related residential and commercial development. We now have a Subway, Oporto, Ogalo, El Jannah, and other chain food options. While few of us would be happy with the addition of a McDonald's, we understand that this comes with the growth of the neighbourhood. And while the Crows Nest Metro station would be the best location for a new Maccas, it's understandable that they have proposed to open in the previous Westpac branch office on Willoughby Rd.
What is completely unacceptable to residents, however, is the demand by McDonald's Australia Limited to open this new location with 24/7 trading hours. Council have already stated this is unacceptable, in their pre-DA meeting on 18 March 2025.
Neither the St Leonard's nor the North Sydney locations trade 24/7 and both are more of a CBD location than the proposed location in Crows Nest. The recent attempt to open a 24/7 location in Redfern was knocked back and Redfern is much closer to the Sydney CBD than Crows Nest.
There is nothing open 24/7 in Crows Nest and all this proposal will do is to allow drunken patrons from the Crows Nest Hotel to visit a McDonald's around the corner, rather than going home. It'll bring crime, vandalism, litter, and random delivery drivers on footpaths and streets at all hours. This is nothing but a money grab by McDonald's with no care for the community.
Again, North Sydney Council have said that 24/7 operation of this proposed Maccas is not allowed. They have also been clear about the requirements to even operate at late hours (11pm Mon-Thur, 12am Fri-Sat, 10pm Sun), even restricted by a trial period. So please let council know that no one wants this to be approved in Crows Nest.
