End The Use of Pig Gestation Crates In The State of New Jersey

End The Use of Pig Gestation Crates In The State of New Jersey
The Issue
I am asking the State Legislature of New Jersey to bring Bill S1971 on the State Senate side of the House and Bill A4439 on the Assembly side to a Committee vote.
Bill S1971 has been sitting in the Senate Environment and Energy Committee since February 25, 2020 and Bill A4439 has been sitting in the Agriculture Committee since July 23, 2020. We need to have these Bills acted upon in their respective committees as soon as possible. Each day that passes without any actions on these bills is yet another day of torture for these innocent, scared animals.
These Bills would prohibit the confinement, in an enclosure, of any sow during gestation in a manner that prevents the sow from turning around freely, lying down, standing up, or fully extending the limbs of the animal. The attached video is of the use of gestation cages that are now banned by Smithfield Foods.
Pigs are highly intelligent, sensitive animals and do not deserve to be treated in such a way. Gestation crates are cruel and inhumane and must be banned. In a gestation cage, a female pig is virtually immobilized 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, while enduring repeated cycles of impregnation. This is a painful and distressing practice for pigs. Pigs have the intelligence of a 3 year old child. Imagine how a 3 year old child would feel in such a situation.
