Nintendo: Bring Back the Dual-Screen Handheld — Create a Modern Successor to the DS & 3DS
The Issue
Nintendo revolutionized portable gaming with the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. These systems weren't simply smaller consoles. Their dual screens, touchscreen and stylus, clamshell design, StreetPass, Download Play, local multiplayer, cameras, and pocket-friendly size created an experience unlike anything else.
The Nintendo Switch successfully combined home console gaming with portable gaming, and the Switch 2 continues that vision. But in that transition, Nintendo's dedicated dual-screen handheld disappeared.
Portable doesn't always mean pocketable.
The Switch is an excellent hybrid system, but it doesn't replace what made the DS and 3DS unique. There is still room for a smaller, affordable Nintendo handheld designed to complement the Switch rather than compete with it.
We are asking Nintendo to consider creating a true modern successor to the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS — a new generation of dual-screen gaming.
Imagine a modern Nintendo handheld with:
A compact clamshell design
Two screens
Touchscreen and stylus gameplay
Modern graphics and performance
StreetPass 2.0
Download Play and local wireless multiplayer
Amiibo/NFC support
Physical games
A DS and 3DS legacy library
Modern Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C
Strong battery life
Connectivity with Nintendo Switch 2
New ways for Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem and other Nintendo franchises to use two screens
Preserve Our Games. Reward Our History.
We ask Nintendo to make backward compatibility a defining feature of its next dedicated handheld.
Players should be able to enjoy their existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS physical game collections on modern hardware.
Additionally, we propose a Legacy Save Data system that allows participating new-generation games to recognize accomplishments from older titles.
Completing older games, collecting rare items, or achieving milestones could unlock exclusive cosmetics, characters, decorations, and other bonuses in supported future releases.
Our gaming history should have value beyond a single console generation.
Nintendo's next handheld should preserve the past while rewarding players for continuing their adventures.
One more feature I'd suggest: Allow players to transfer their original DS/3DS save data to the 3DS² while preserving their existing cartridges and saves.
That would make upgrading much more attractive for longtime Nintendo collectors like you.
This isn't about replacing the Nintendo Switch 2.
It's about preserving another part of Nintendo's identity.
The Game Boy, DS and 3DS showed that a dedicated handheld could inspire entirely different kinds of games. Developers designed around two screens, touch controls, portability and local communication rather than simply shrinking console games.
A new generation deserves that experience too.
Nintendo, bring back the dedicated dual-screen handheld.
Bring back the magic of carrying Nintendo in your pocket.
