The Issue

As animal rescuers, we have taken in many abused and unwanted animals and cared for them until we can find proper homes, if at all. Rescues do more for the animals in this state than any Humane society, government agency, judge, or law enforcement. We use our own resources, funds and try to help one another to save the animals. Time and time again, I find myself sitting in an emergency vets office to care for an injured animal that has been beaten, neglected, or run over and left to die. Vets require payment up front for these services which can escalate into the thousands easily. I've watched crying pet owners have to leave with injured and suffering animals because they cannot afford the cost to save them. There are many animals relinquished to animals shelters because their owners cannot afford medical care. This is wrong! Would a child or human be turned away for treatment because of cost? Many of these animals are all their owners have for companionship. I am asking that the costs of vet treatment be regulated so that these living, breathing, lives can be saved without their owners having to choose insurmountable debt over the life of their loved one. Yes, there is pet insurance, but many vets don't take it or the they don't cover anything. Yes, there are credit cards with huge interest rates but many don't qualify. It's time for the government to step in and demand that there be limits on the profits made by vets while preying on grieving pet owners. I am a nurse and I know the cost of medical supplies. What these vets charge for a pill, supplies, or IV bag of normal saline is way over what the purchase price is. The fees for diagnostic tests and office visits are grossly overcharged as well. This is wrong! Please consider regulating these services so that we can keep our family members healthy and with us for their entire lives. They deserve a comfortable, safe, place to grow old.
