Driver who hit cyclist as he texted and drove must be charged and held accountable

Driver who hit cyclist as he texted and drove must be charged and held accountable
The Issue
On October 17, 2015, on Blanco Road, Bexar County, Mr. John Lampe, a local radiologist, was struck by a pick up truck as Mr. Lampe rode his bicycle with a group of local cyclists. The driver had run off the road and hit the cyclist because he was texting. Mr. Lampe sustained serious injuries as a result of the hit and was air-lifted to a local hospital for treatment. He spent the night in the ICU. He suffered injuries that caused brain and internal organ bleeding. He remains in the hospital.
There is a large community of cyclists in San Antonio. Motorist in San Antonio generally do not respect the Cyclists' right of using our roads. They do not obey the passing laws and generally come too close to our bikes. The motorist's disregard for cyclists' safety is unacceptable. Motorist must learn to share the road with cyclists. Most importantly, drivers must understand that texting and driving is unacceptable.
Mr. Lampe's incident must not become another sad story of a cyclist accident. It was not an accident. Mr. Lampe's injuries are the result of the driver's recklessness. His clear disregard for a substantial risk, texting and driving, was the direct result of Mr. Lampe's injuries.
The Government and the District Attorney's Office must send a clear message to the community that this type of conduct will not be tolerated. The driver who ran over Mr. Lampe must be held accountable and charged with felony assault.
