World Literacy Day was created in 1965 to create awareness of local and global barriers to literacy, and has since been instrumental in promoting literacy worldwide.

According to UNESCO's website: "this year’s International Literacy Day will highlight the challenges and opportunities in promoting literacy in the digital world, a world where, despite progress, at least 758 million adults and 263 million out-of-school children still lack basic literacy skills."

Since Unown is a Pokemon that is modelled after the Latin alphabet, it doubles as a symbol of literacy.  Consequently, we implore Niantic to partner with UNESCO to help highlight the important work, and encourage greater literacy among its players and beyond.

Please, Niantic, bring Unown to the game on a large scale for International Literacy Day (September 8, 2017)!
