More than 70 people have now objected directly to the council in relation to plans for Cell A. As part of the application, Newcastle Great Park Consortium wants playing fields in Cell B1, directly adjacent to the southern perimeter of Havannah and Three Hills Nature Reserve. Cell B1 is currently designated as Green Belt and should have been landscaped for nature conservation purposes to mitigate for the impact of the Sage and park and ride, both of which were completed several years ago. But this has not been implemented. The development permitted to date therefore could not have been justified in environmental terms without significant enhanced habitat and parkland in the area that is now proposed for playing fields. Amenity grassland associated with playing pitches would be intensively managed with fertiliser and herbicides and, with regular cutting, would offer no ecological value, resulting in a net loss of biodiversity. This is yet another example of total disregard for the natural environment, on the part of Newcastle Great Park Consortium and Newcastle City Council. Development in the Green Belt is only permitted in exceptional circumstances and playing fields do not constitute exceptional circumstances. We have written to the planning department to contend the application, which we believe to be flawed in terms of the principle and legality of the proposed location of playing fields at B1, and the proposed development of 1,200 dwellings. If you are yet to submit your objection, please include this in your comments by logging in or registering here: https://publicaccessapplications.newcastle.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=makeComment&keyVal=OPOK2PBS0EQ00 You can also email objections directly to adam.nilsson@newcastle.gov.uk, quoting planning application 2017/0666/01/OUT In other news, we have now been informed that a request has been made to withdraw the allotment proposals, so thank you to everyone involved in overturning these plans.
