Thank You! Your incredible effort of over 150,000 signatures has led a world-wide attention to this important issue. Your efforts have caught the attention of dozens of news sources and even garnered an initial response from the New York Times. Will everyone share this on social media one more time? Let’s show the New York Times that we are united in this endeavor! As a reminder, the spirit of the petition is one of respect and kindness. If we want to follow Thomas Monson’s example, we should be kind to all around us. If you see contention as a result of this petition, please respond in a kind way. We are not asking that anyone is fired, we are not asking that the New York Times shut down, and we are not going to riot in the streets if we don’t get what we want. We are simply a unified voice with one interest in mind. The New York Times posted a response to “hundreds of messages” and “dozens of comments” criticizing the piece. This was because of you! We appreciate the Times sharing and acknowledging the following: • They shared specific comments from individuals who had reached out to them with concerns • Their attention was spent on the public man and not the private • They do their best to portray the newsworthy items of a person’s life without bending to a particular group or agenda That being said, we are still concerned that the Times has not addressed the following important points: • Why their tweet highlighted the controversial aspects of his life, instead of a neutral statement • Why the obit kicks off with controversy, ultimately setting the tone for the piece • Why so much emphasis was placed on the things he did not do rather than the things he did do We appreciate the New York Time’s first response and look forward to these changes -Nathan
