Provide All Gender Bathrooms

The Issue

We are artists, curators, critics, and art enthusiasts from all walks of life who believe it is time for art museums to provide facilities that respect the diversity of their audiences and the artists they exhibit. It is time for every art museum in New York City that shows contemporary art to provide easy access to an adequate number of properly labeled all gender bathrooms. As gender non-conforming individuals and communities become more prevalent as artistic voices, it is crucial that the museums championing them and their work also function as safe and respectful spaces for all of their visitors. The provision of all gender bathrooms is a crucial step in this direction.

Many art institutions have recognized this need and provided accommodating facilities, and it is time that others follow suit. The absence of these facilities in progressive institutions supports an outdated and discriminatory status quo, fostering a disrespectful and unsafe environment for the very artists and audiences that these museums cultivate and from whom they profit. Join us in encouraging our institutions to become accommodating spaces for all of us, not just in sentiment but in practice. While some museums provide wheelchair accessible single-use restrooms, these facilities are often already overtaxed and difficult to locate. Our hope is to see institutions make reasonable efforts to provide convenient all gender restrooms in addition to these facilities. The mandate of widely accessible all gender bathrooms is a systemic change that needs to occur on state and nationwide legal levels. Until that time, we urge contemporary art museums to take action in advance of overdue legal provisions, utilizing their institutional authority to send a powerful message about the feasibility and necessity of these changes.

It's time for all gender museum bathrooms. This petition was drafted by a coalition of artists and allies; we encourage you to sign it and share it widely—it is only through the joining of our many voices that this crucial change be realized.
