The Issue

The Grand Prospect Hall is an icon of Brooklyn, and has been standing as a communal space where Brooklynites come to celebrate ever since its construction in 1892. It was recently sold for over $30 million, and the developer, Angelo Rigas, filed yet-to-be-approved demolition permits with the Department of Buildings on July 23rd.

This historic venue, host to Brooklyn's oldest operating elevator, is now at risk of disappearing from existence, destroying its legacy and the location where thousands of weddings, festivals, and concerts have taken place over its 129 year lifespan. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1999, the ballroom has yet to receive landmark status from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

This is an obscene development, and if the Department of Buildings chooses to approve this demolition, over a century of Brooklyn history will be gone. Our goal with this petition is to halt the approval of demolition permits while the Landmarks Preservation Commission review the possibility of protecting the Grand Prospect Hall from demolition or major reconstruction. We have submitted a Request for Evaluation to the LPC and are awaiting a response, but in the meantime, it is our goal to prevent any further demolition proceedings.

Please support our cause by signing and sharing. Millions of Brooklynites thank you.
