Getting New Leaf back to health
Feb 14, 2018 — Hello, New Leaf organics supporters! I wanted to share an update about what I've learned about New Leaf's shift away from organic foods. I spoke at length with the New Seasons community liaison in their corporate office in Portland. What I learned boils down to the basic fact that New Seasons openly states they are not a 'health food' chain, their store model is a mix of conventional and organic, akin to Safeway. They are now applying that model to New Leaf stores to see if it is a success.
On the plus side, New Seasons is a small chain and pays close attention to customer feedback, so a vigorous response from their New Leaf customers (us!) is going to be noted. We've already seen that to be true in action, when they quickly removed Cheerios from the Westside store within twenty-four hours of this petition being circulated.
In the bigger picture, this change is about whether health food stores still have a place in the grocery world. New Seasons doesn't think stores devoted to 'health food' are what consumers want. I disagree, and some of you probably do too! I've modified the petition language slightly to focus on asking New Seasons to change the New Leaf mission statement to include an outright commitment to being a health food store.
I'm grateful for each of your signatures, your many comments, and for such a clear message of support for New Leaf's former mission to send to New Season's CEO. I plan to send our petition to her within a week. I will share what response they have, if any. The petition continues to be live, so feel free to continue to share or re-share on your Facebook feeds, and let checkers and managers know your feelings if you shop at New Leaf. For now, I've enjoyed doing my big grocery runs at Staff of Life! I'm newly appreciative of how health-food focused that store has stayed over the years. Let's get New Leaf back to health!
