The Issue

The Quays Shopping Centre in Newry stands as a cornerstone of our community, having been a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike. For many of us, The Quays is more than just a shopping centre; it represents years of cherished memories, family outings, and a crucial gathering place. However, in recent years, the centre has been neglected, showing visible signs of deterioration and a lack of vibrant energy that once defined it.

Once bustling with activity and excitement, The Quays has now seen a decline in shopper numbers and an increase in vacant units. This decline has impacted the local economy and the morale of the community. Empty storefronts are a constant reminder of missed opportunities and potential that is currently untapped. The current management seems incapable of reversing this downward trend, leaving us no choice but to call for a change in ownership and a comprehensive overhaul of the Centre.

The Quays Shopping Centre has immense potential to be a premier shopping destination, but it is currently being held back by a complete lack of investment and vision. Since the year the current owners purchased the complex, absolutely nothing has been done to modernize or improve it. As a result, the centre feels incredibly dated, tired, and in desperate need of a full refurbishment.

Statistics reveal that shopping centres that undergo modernisation and refurbishment see an average increase in foot traffic by 40-60% and enhanced economic activity that benefits all neighbouring businesses. A modernised and refurbished Quays Shopping Centre would undoubtedly reignite the vibrant community spirit and transform the centre into a thriving commercial hub that we can all be proud of.

Locals deserve a vibrant, modern retail hub, but the current reality is disappointing. The shopping centre simply does not have enough shops, and the overall atmosphere is dragged down by a horrible music selection that desperately needs to be replaced with proper licensed music in the mall aswell as a complete modernisation of its interior and exterior to make it appealing to big brands.

To truly unlock its potential, we are calling for new ownership that will actively invest in the centre, target big-name brands, and bring in the stores and food options that the community actually wants.

We demand that a revitalized Quays Shopping Centre brings in:
Exciting New Retail Openings: High-demand stores like Dunelm, ZARA, Frasers / House of Fraser, Normal, Jysk, Small IKEA, Mango, Miniso, Pull&Bear, HMV, and SpaceNK to expand our shopping options alongside existing favourites like H&M and River Island.

A Revamped Food Court: A modern dining experience featuring popular, major brands such as Nando's, Chopstix, Five Guys, Boojum and Krispy Kreme.

It is time for the current owners to step aside and clear the way for leadership that will give The Quays the refresh and bright future it deserves. Sign this petition to demand new ownership and a better shopping experience for everyone.
