Ban the Cruel Practice of Trapping and Leg Hold Snares in New Mexico

Ban the Cruel Practice of Trapping and Leg Hold Snares in New Mexico

The Issue

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated” Mahatma Gandhi

On August 27th, the Governor of New Mexico, Susana Martinez, and her hand-picked directors on the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish board declared war on one of New Mexico's most precious resources--our predatory animals--by voting unanimously to expand the trapping, snaring, and killing of our mountain lions. By a 7-0 vote, the NMDGF expanded the cruel practice of trapping by an additional nine million acres of state trust lands (and also includes all private land).

Recent polls reflect that New Mexicans oppose trapping in general by a three-to-one margin, and oppose the trapping and snaring of cougars by the same margin. (There has always been open season on coyotes.)  This gross expansion of trapping was created mainly at the behest of a small minority of ranchers, farmers, and hunters, and flew in the face of 6000 signatures in opposition to the plan

These torturous traps do not distinguish between species, and will close on bobcats, coyotes, and domestic pets alike. They will ensnare the mothers of young cubs as well.

This vote by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish counters the hearts and sensibilities of the majority of good people across our beloved state, as well as throughout the country. New Mexico’s cougars and bobcats need your help! Please sign this petition and pass it along.

This expanded trapping will go into affect on January 1st, 2016. Let Senators Tom Udall, Martin Heinrich, Governor Susana Martinez, and the comissioners for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish know that this needless and cruel slaughter will not go unnoticed. Sign this petition and call or email the governor of New Mexico and the members of Game and Fish.
