Dear Supporters,
We are thrilled to announce that our fight to abolish slavery in New Jersey is back on the legislative agenda for 2024-2025! Bills ACR 137 and SCR 12 are once again up for consideration, and this is our moment to make history and end the last vestiges of slavery in our state constitution.
The Bills:
ACR 137: Sponsored by Assembly Members Shavonda Sumter, Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and Benjie Wimberly, this bill is currently in the State and Local Government Committee.
SCR 12: Sponsored by Senators Brian Stack and Shirley Turner, this bill is in the State Government, Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee.
These bills propose a constitutional referendum to eliminate the exception clause that still allows for slavery and involuntary servitude. This is a crucial step in dismantling systemic racism and reforming our justice system.
Why Now?
Ending slavery in our constitution is not just a symbolic act; it is a vital move towards justice and equality. This exception clause has been exploited to perpetuate practices that disproportionately harm communities of color. By closing this loophole, we take a significant step toward ending mass incarceration and promoting human rights.
